After a short brief quick break we finally have the results for the latest AusNS Top Ten. This time we asked you what was your favourite sound in Natural Selection. Some of the sounds in NS are truly unforgettable, and we had some great suggestions for just what could be the best of all. The sounds for Natural Selection have evolved over it’s many years, mostly for the better. NS has now reached a point where it’s sound scape rivals most full fledged games, and in some cases, surpasses them in quality.
So here you have it, your community elected top ten NS sounds are:
10. ‘Chuckle‘ - The alien chuckle is an unforgettable mainstay in natural selection. It’s use is far more than simply ornamental. From embarrassing a marine you just killed, to foreshadowing the imminent doom of your prey, to just plain annoying the crap out of every player on the opposing team. The alien chuckle better be in NS2 or there will be a lot of unhappy die hard NS fans out there.
9. Skulk Footstep – Possibly the most common sound in ns outside of the weapons. The skulks footstep’s importance is unparalleled however, they can reveal an impending ambush, help the commander identify the starting hive. The success of the ’silence’ upgrade is testament alone to the importance of the skulk footstep, it’s distinct sound is something any NSPlayer worth his salt can pick out of the white noise of the battlefield.
8. Join/Quit Sound - There is nothing anyone likes more than hearing the sweet sound of a enemy player quitting after you blast their fade into oblivion. It is just satisfying in knowing that you just made somebody’s day that little bit worse. It’s not surprising that this sound makes it onto number 8 in our communities all time favourites.
7. Primal Scream - There is little solace a marine can take when he hears the dread of the primal scream. Like a full stop on the marines campaign to win the match, it signals the arrival of the final hive with a frenzy of biting-exploding skulks screaming back in unison. The journey of primal scream started with the onos, finally shifting to the lerk with the advent of stomp and the removal of spikes.
6. Alien, ‘Resources collected‘ – The sweet sound of success, after making a kill alien players are treating with the gooey gloop of the resources you are treated to. Particularly rewarding after parasite kills.
5. Hive Death - What all marine players aim for, the glorious sound of a hive groaning in agony before going limp and exploding in a placental mess.
4. The Siege Cannon – The glory of the TSA lies in the siege cannon, and it’s bassy super sonic blast can only signal bad news for their xenocidal enemies. From the sound of a cannon deploying, to the inevitable blast it delivers, the sound of a siege cannon will always marks a turning point in the match.
3. Now We Dance(donce) – After being belittled and ridiculed by the hive mind, it finally lets you know you are doing a good job if you manage a 3rd hive. As an overture to the reckoning about to be delivered, the hive mind initiates the dance revolution.
2. Tool Tip - No matter the situation, no matter the time, the sweet sound of the tool tip is like a warm pair of hands massaging your shoulders as a fade bears down and your base falls down around you. The tool tip will forever be your friend, it will never abandon hope, it will never ask you to get up and put the garbage out at 6am because you forgot to the night before and you have to beat the bin man or you will be stuck with a bunch of rubbish out the back for 2 weeks and it will smell bad.
1. Squad 5 – Clearly the most popular choice for any NSPlayer out there. It is a quantifiable fact that marines perform better if they are placed in squad 5, and your commander lets you know in the most awesome way possible. Inspiring one of the strongest clans in AusNS’ history, the psychological advantages to squad 5 are too numerous to list.
Oh and, what the hell is this!?
