The biggest news over the past few weeks has been the revelation of the “taser’ weapon concept to replace both the knife and the pistol. It’s pretty controversial and has been causing a lot of discussion both on our own forums and on the official forums. You can read my thoughts on it here.

Now that my own horn has been sufficiently tooted, megalist updates!

Commanding Public to Advanced

Introduction

Basically a point of view guide designed to help those generally playing marines as a soldier instead of exploring the commanding role. Others have either had disappointing results on a constant basis, or don’t really understand what to do or how to do it effectively enough to not get ejected or abused/hated on. The guide is not supposed to WOW decent commanders or even in fact teach them anything new, it’s pretty much just a quick summary of commanding a game of normal NS. Views and opinions are always welcome, negative criticism will be ignored and hopefully we see a few more people in the race to the chair !!

NSPlayer NS2 Interview
by Mr Charisma Sunday, 19th July, 2009 at 4:04 pm under News [23 comments]

Homegrown NS1 website NSPlayer.net have managed to tie down workaholic Flayra and get him to answer a few questions regarding NS2. Focusing on some of the competitive aspects of NS2,  the info will be sure to calm the seemingly ruffled feathers of those in the organised play scene. Also be sure to check out the info on the alien commander!

Theirs [sic] been abit [sic] of talk about the Alien ‘overlord’ is this going to make the balance better as well as keep the teams different in perspective to NS1? and whats the RTS view going to be like for the overlord?

It won’t be an “overlord” per se, but an alien Commander. In fact, each team can have multiple Commanders if they want! This is one of the biggest changes from NS1 and I think it’s going to improve the game a lot. The biggest reason there is an alien Commander in NS2 is to improve the balance. NS1 was designed and balanced for 6v6 play. It wasn’t designed from the very beginning with this in mind, but happened later after I realized that there were some fundamental balance problems due to the asymmetrical resource model. The marines have only shared team resources and the aliens have team resources that are split among all the team members. This means that as the number of players in the game changes, the resource model on the aliens changes. In bigger games, this could mean the by mid-game, aliens could need to wait a long time to build a resource tower, because incoming resources come in so slowly (due to them being split up among everyone in the team). It also means that the early game changes because every alien starts with 25 resources – so even the starting resources change due to team size. The way to resolve this for competitive play was to choose 6v6 as the target and balance it for that. This was somewhat manageable in NS1, but it’s not something we care to repeat.

There it is folks, the image that stunned a generation. Revealed on Twitter with the cryptic description “Checking out a new revision of KFS’ tram map (missing textures showing up as blue checkerboards, oops).” the dev team have gifted unto us an incredible new in-game screenshot!!!12345, 67910. 11 12.

Obviously the angle isn’t that great and that Jesus aura around the dude on the right is kind of distracting so using the magic of photoshop I’ve managed to enhance, enhance the following jaw dropping image:

amazing

Amazing, no? No? How about some megalist updates to tide you over?

IGN Preview – Meet The Onos
by aegix Friday, 3rd July, 2009 at 12:02 pm under News [8 comments]

IGN have an NS2 preview up. It’s mostly a quick overview of things we already know, but it does include a few new pieces of information. The most obvious is the Onos trailer below, showcasing the new run animation with a touch of Gorilla gorilla.

There’s also this paragraph on the Onos’s abilities in NS2:

So the new Onos in Natural Selection 2 have the following powers. There’s Gore, which is a melee attack where the Onos can slam his head into a target and even flight them around. Bone Shield makes blades come out of the Onos’ head, so when crouched down it protects the rest of his body from frontal attack. Then there’s Stomp, which can be used to send out a shockwave that disables structures that the Marine commander puts down.

IGN promise more alien trailers are coming in the near future, so we should probably pay attention or something. Check out the full preview!

Note: IGN are incorrect where they say the aliens do not have a commander. The aliens do have a commander in NS2.
